ABOUT Pawetry In Motion
Donna Hughes is a writer who began her studies of animal behavior as a pre-schooler, when she discovered that she could lure neighbors’ dogs back to her yard if she filled her tiny pockets with deli ham. (She told her mother they had followed her home, which, technically, *was* true.) After the buzz-kill grown-ups foiled this brilliant plan, she dutifully walked all of those dogs back to their rightful homes. But now she has her own quirky canine and feline companions, a very patient husband, and a collection of two- and four-legged friends who have provided many of the themes in these poems.
Her work has been published in “The Bark," the national magazine of dog culture and lifestyle, as well as being chosen for display around Alexandria, Virginia, in a month-long, city-wide salute to the love of canines overseen by the city’s Poet Laureate at the time. In 2018, she, herself, was named honorary Poet (Pawet?) Laureate of Your Dog's Best Friends, Alexandria’s award-winning dog daycare and training center, where her dog, Libby, was on staff as a professional orientation dog for many years.
Although the poems were written originally for the author's own amusement, they hold something for audiences of all ages. Kids, especially, seem to enjoy the rhyme and meter of them when read aloud. At the same time, there are turns of phrase and literary allusions that only the more seasoned reader will get. She hopes you can see some of your own beloved furbots in and derive a smile or two from her verse.

Every poem is based on a true story or real-life observation. Some were drafted in my head while walking a canine lifemate (Libby, "Rainy Day Blues"). Some are composites of many different dogs and their stories ("Resolutions"). Still others were fleeting observations of strangers' dogs -- for example, driving past an ice cream parlor on a hot, summer's day, where two dogs were sitting like statues, concentrating all of their psychic energy on their owner's cone ("Tele-canine-esis"), or a ten-pound pooch growling softly at two giant mastiffs sauntering past, unaware of the mortal peril they, or at least their toes, were in. ("Don't Mess With Chi-Chi").
